Last I knew, engine knock was caused by low octane fuel/bad gas . Has this changed?

“ Sea Foam is an environmentally friendly oil additive which is registered with the Environmental Protection Agency. Since it is 100% petroleum based, it will be good for both your engine and the outside surroundings.”

Yes, the outside environment loves petroleum!

Idk this says you need a “good strong oil” which makes perfect sense to me

It can also be caused by carbon buildup effectively increasing compression ratio or a lean mixture . They seem to be talking about lifter/valvetrain tick instead of detonation but it all seems to be BS.

last time i had an engine start knocking loudly it was a broken camshaft

i dont think fancy oil would have helped much at that point....

(also wasnt so much a pinging as a loud banging in there... amazed it got me to the nearest garage... very slowly and very loudly... but it got there... and that was the last time me old galant ran)

Nope - hasn't changed. But the article describes a ticking sound in the valvetrain that could be lubrication related. Really, that's a poorly written article that seems to be making a false equivalence between two unrelated problems (other than a lack of maintenance...)

You can also get a rod knock or a very loud ticking from the valve train that can sound like a knock.

In either case additives won’t help or cure that. You’d done fucked up your engine at that point and need a rebuilt one.

That's why my instructor called that section of the parts store the wall of wishful thinking.

But shouldn’t petroleum stay outside the environment?

My wife’s Liberty recently had what sounded to me like a rod knock, and I thought the engine was toast. It turned out to be a PCV thing and the noise was actually from the lifters. Dodged the bullet, I did..

“Wall of wishful thinking”   LoL

If your engine carboned up enough to increase the compression ratio, that could cause knocking. But an oil additive is not going to fix that.

The Genuine Ford Fluid XL-3 Friction Modifie r is an oil additive recommended specifically for Ford engines. The metallic surface friction will be immediately reduced, which will expand the lifespan of your engine. Your differentials will no longer make so much noise either. All these benefits are experienced rather quickly.

“Specifically for Ford engines” ? “ Engines ”? “ Specifically ”?

Since when? That stuff i s specifically for clutch-type limited slip (aka Traction-Lok) differentials. That’s it’s primary (if not only ) purpose. I’ve never even heard of anyone putting it in an engine.
